Gua Sha
Gua Sha is an ancient
technique of manual therapy involving rubbing a blunt
instrument across the skin in the areas that need to be
treated. The technique is both diagnostic and
therapeutic. The diagnostic part occurs where the
skin becomes darker due to stagnation in the
tissue. Gua Sha brings stagnation to the surface
in the form of petechiae. Petechiae is the
formation of little red bumps under the surface of the
skin. The Petechiae will only form in areas of
stagnation. Rubbing the Gua Sha instrument over
large areas will identify the areas of stagnation with
the appearance of Petechiae. Healthy areas are
unaffected, and will only turn a light pink due to the
stimulation of the instrument. It has been
described as a deep massage, but Gua Sha is able to
accomplish much more than even a deep tissue massage
typically in fewer sessions. The therapeutic
benefit results from continuing to treat the areas where
petechiae has formed. These areas can also be
treated with acupuncture needles or ultrasound if
desired.
